Emerging Markets Brazil and Mexico in Top Five Jurisdictions for Highest Trademark Volume for Second Year in a Row, Corsearch Reveals in New Report

  • ‘Life’ is the most trademarked word in the US, occupying the top spot since 2000
  • Electric & scientific devices and advertising & business were the top product classes filed in 2023 internationally, ranking 1st and 2nd place respectively

Thursday, July 25, 2024 – Leading provider of brand protection and trademark solutions Corsearch has today launched its eminent Trademark Industry Report 2024, revealing trademark trends, volume, popular words used in trademarks, with year-on-year comparisons of the global trademark industry.

The report reveals the top jurisdictions for trademark filings in 2023, and the top owner countries (ie the locations in which companies filing trademarks are based) with China continuing to dominate global markets in both metrics. Indeed, filings from Chinese companies stand almost 14 times that of filings from the US in 2023.

Notably, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey have consistently appeared high in the rankings for both volume of trademark filing owner countries and jurisdictions in which trademarks are filed, demonstrating a strong appetite for growth and innovation in these emerging markets.

The strongest product classes

The Corsearch report shows that the top product classes filed in 2023 are consistent on a global scale and there has been little change compared to last year’s report. The strongest activity globally of all the classes by a significant margin was Advertising & Business.

In the UK, filing activity by product class shows the same classes in the top five as in US and EU. Electric & Scientific devices and Advertising & Business still have first and second place respectively as in US and EU. Education & Entertainment was the third most activity with Clothing and Research & Development appearing fourth and fifth on the list.

IP professionals operating in these sectors should pay careful attention to new technologies and products being developed, as the overall pace of trademark filing suggests a busy year ahead.

Leading Filers

In 2023, Tencent Technologies and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey retained their positions as the top filers. Significant changes from 2022 include L’Oréal rising to third place, replacing Amazon, while Huawei Technologies maintained its fourth-place position. Notably, Chongqing Changan Automobile Company surged from 35th to 5th place.

Evolution of Language in Trademarks

The report also analyzes the most common words used in trademark filings internationally over the decades. A notable shift is the disappearance of ‘euro’ from the top 10 words in the EU since 2000 and ‘american’ and ‘america’ from the US top 10 since 2000.

Conversely, the word ‘life’ has remained prominent in both regions, ranking third in the EU and first in the US in 2000, reaching the top spot in the EU in 2010, and maintaining the top spot in the US since 2000.

Viji Krishnan, President of Trademark Solutions at Corsearch comments:

“The Trademark Industry Report gives us a wealth of insight into filing activity across the globe. We’re seeing a strong appetite for growth in emerging markets and new technologies are driving progress and expansion in the top product classes, including Electric & Scientific Devices and Research & Development. The report also shows marketing teams are capitalizing on new products through Advertising & Business trademarks.

“This trend is only set to continue. Corsearch forecasts that over 100 million registered global trademarks will be active and in force by the end of 2026, more than doubling over the course of a decade. Whilst this is an optimistic sign of innovation and empowering global business, it will become harder for companies to stay abreast of brands appearing with similar names and attributes. Legal and marketing teams need to make use of new AI tools, such as our Trademark Now platform, alongside human expertise and experience in brand protection, to help them manage the size of modern trademark portfolios.”
