Innovation meets the counterfeit threat
Kelly and Greg Seralt founded Instantly Ageless in 2008, investing their own equity to launch a product that could temporarily reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and puffy eyes.
Demonstrations at women’s trade shows showcased results in under two minutes, generating immediate excitement. Soon the brand appeared on Good Morning America, The Doctors, and The Rachael Ray Show, and expanded distribution into over 100 countries.
But rapid global growth brought a serious challenge: counterfeiters. Fake versions replicated Instantly Ageless packaging, often containing ineffective or unknown substances. Customers reported products that didn’t work, had the wrong color or texture, or caused unexpected reactions. Kelly recalls the overwhelming scope of the problem: “It was like the Wild Wild West. We weren’t anywhere close to combating it.”
The limits of going it alone
The Seralts pursued customs enforcement, legal filings, and other measures to block imports. While they stopped some fake products, the scale of the threat far exceeded what they could handle. Fraudulent listings continued to appear on Alibaba, Wish.com, and individual websites. Every counterfeit sale diverted revenue and risked harming customers’ trust.
“Some of these were our loyal customers who got the counterfeit product, and we had to spend hours addressing the complaints” Kelly says. It became clear that they needed a partner with global reach, legal expertise, and enforcement power to make a measurable difference.
