The unpredictability of the Mystery Box model has created a massive visibility gap for IP owners, providing ideal cover for counterfeiters to flood the market with fakes.
To help brands and consumers see this risk earlier, Corsearch conducted a targeted research project in May 2026 to quantify the volume of counterfeit football jerseys moving through these channels.
The project included test purchasing a range of football shirt Mystery Boxes from various independent websites and online marketplace sellers to authenticate the items delivered. Mystery Boxes send a random ‘mystery shirt in a box’ to fans who hope to get lucky and hit the jackpot.
The Counterfeit Risk of Mystery Box Purchases
The unpredictability within the Mystery Box model presents a significant challenge for IP owners seeking to verify product authenticity.
The consumer would place an order for a ‘box’, select the appropriate size and potentially be offered an option of customisation. The consumer would then receive a random jersey at a much lower price-point (averaging £25-55 per box) than buying a jersey for a specific team.
In the lead up to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Corsearch has seen an increase in the number of suppliers of World Cup jersey Mystery Boxes across marketplaces, social media, but predominantly websites. Many of these suppliers have a selection of Mystery Boxes available to choose from, including ones specific to the 2026 World Cup, national teams, specific leagues, or children’s sizes.
The Mystery Box business model is unfortunately attractive to counterfeit sellers as the seller can deliver any jersey which they have in stock of the requested size. Because the Mystery Box model obscures exactly which items are being shipped, IP teams have historically had to rely on reactive consumer complaints.
The Data from Corsearch
During our research, we test purchased various football jersey Mystery Boxes from a range of price points.
The majority of these suppliers delivered globally, and provided multiple sizes. Through a collaboration between Corsearch, various football clubs and sponsors, we were able to authenticate the items received.
Our results showed that 40% of Mystery Box sellers supplied a counterfeit football jersey. For IP teams, this intelligence quantifies a severe, systemic threat: unregulated sellers are not just infringing on Trademarks; they are actively eroding commercial margins and damaging the fan experience ahead of major global events.
Many of these items were of low quality, including spelling mistakes, poor quality packaging, missing logos and inaccurate designs.
Examples received included:
Example 1 - Some of the jerseys delivered included obvious misspellings, such as ‘Porever Bftter’:

Example 2 - Varying accuracies of jersey designs were received, with some more closely resembling the original design than others.

Example 3 - Packaging and labelling showed obvious misspellings and inaccuracies.

Although many Mystery Boxes can be purchased on independent websites, a much higher proportion of counterfeits, accumulating to 70% of those confirmed as infringing, were found on Marketplaces. These were primarily independent sellers providing Mystery Boxes below the price point of £30.
Interestingly, these sellers also provided ‘free gifts’ within the boxes, including branded keyrings, stickers and various ‘memorabilia’ - all of which abuse IP rights. Presumably, adding ‘free gifts’ would aim to attract repeat buyers, and potentially receive positive reviews on their seller profiles.
There were also significant differences in the quality of packaging. The products that were confirmed as genuine usually included seller branded boxes, the jerseys were well presented, included returns information, and a description of the jerseys club and year of release.
In comparison, those confirmed as counterfeit were usually poorly packaged in plastic, with no other receipt or invoice to directly connect to the seller.
Identifying Suspicious Targets
As a result of our investigations, the following red flags should be reviewed when monitoring for such cases:
- Prices are extremely low for Mystery Boxes claiming to provide the most recent jerseys (eg below £30)
- There is no clear returns or exchange policy
- The seller has negative reviews, or very little history
- The seller provides vague descriptions, such as “premium condition” without authentication guarantees
Conclusion
Beyond the economic impact, the prevalence of counterfeit merchandise erodes consumer trust and diminishes the fan experience. Every low-quality, inaccurate replica serves as a disservice to the supporter and weakens the connection between the fan and the club brand.
Authentic jerseys from brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Puma are manufactured under regulated standards and safety testing, whereas counterfeit versions may use cheaper or untested synthetic materials, including polyester blends and recycled plastics.
They also bypass formal regulatory requirements for labelling and, in some cases, flammability compliance. In addition, low-cost printing methods such as heat-transfer films, adhesives, or coatings may be used, which can degrade, melt, or potentially ignite when exposed to heat.
Purchasing from well-known, dedicated football jersey retailers with a track record, is usually a reliable way to ensure genuine products are received. For IP teams, collaborative test purchasing is no longer optional; it is an essential intelligence-gathering tool to establish long-term preventative measures, particularly during key global events.
But while key events like the World Cup act as a catalyst for counterfeit activity, this is a systemic issue that persists year-round. Working directly with online Marketplaces to protect consumers is also an essential step in reducing the visibility of sellers taking advantage of consumer demand, whilst establishing long-term preventative measures.
Ultimately, by fostering deeper collaboration between clubs, sponsors, and online marketplaces, we can build a more resilient ecosystem that protects both IP rights and the integrity of the game for supporters worldwide.
